How Does Acne Form?
Acne is an inflammatory skin condition commonly leading to pimples, blackheads, and similar blemishes. It is generally caused by overactive sebaceous glands, which produce skin oils. Overactive sebaceous glands can stem from hormone imbalances (frequently during puberty), heredity, and stress.
The excess oil then combines with dead skin cells to block the pores. These clogged pores become a breeding ground for bacteria, increasing the likelihood of visible acne symptoms.
How Does AviClear® Work For Treating Acne?
Many acne scar removal treatments, even multiple cosmetic laser devices, aren’t used on active acne. This is because those devices work by creating a controlled wound to stimulate the body’s wound-healing response. But with the increased presence of skin bacteria, open wounds could potentially make matters worse.
Instead, AviClear® allows us to target the sebaceous glands themselves. Using a 1726 nm concentrated beam of light (laser), we can selectively treat the glands, reducing their oil output and thereby leading to improved pores and less acne.
Does AviClear® Hurt?
The AviClear® device is also equipped with AviCool™ sapphire skin cooling and smart sensors, greatly reducing the chance of discomfort. If anything, patients usually only report a dull snapping sensation. If necessary, we can also apply a topical numbing solution.
How Many Sessions Will I Need For My Acne To Go Away?
Patients typically only need three 30-minute appointments to experience their desired results. No downtime is required. In some instances, patients may need to schedule a follow-up treatment a few years later to maintain their results.
Is Laser Therapy My Only Option?
Not necessarily. Chemical peels are also an option when it comes to acne treatments. During a chemical peel, the pores are unclogged and dead skin cells are removed, leading to cleaner, rejuvenated skin. This can be a great choice if you only experience occasional flareups, but it will not have an effect on the sebaceous glands themselves.
